Cyprus 12

Old Nicosia

My early morning walks through the old walled city of Nicosia were incredible forays into a different time and space, the likes of which I had not even imagined. Narrow streets, many not wide enough for more than one car at a time to traverse, wound between buildings that had been constructed many years earlier. The actual wall which surrounds the old city was constructed in the mid 16th century. I was particularly drawn to the doorways of the structures. I layered some arabic text on to the walls in this image, and carried that text out to the papers surrounding the image. Gestural marks made with a brush complete the piece.
