Cyprus 8

Artifacts

These chunks of carved stone were resting inside an unused outdoor fireplace that had been built in the middle of a large plaza in Nicosia. I was struck by the casualness with which people on the island accepted items from antiquity. It reminded me of something I heard once which went “a European thinks 100 miles is a long distance, and an American thinks 100 years is a long time.” I surrounded the image with handmade paper and pages from a book I bought in Ortakoy, and added shapes and gestural lines with paint.
